By Andrew J Hemstrought
The Holy Ghost is the Spirit of Discipline. It’s one of His names. If you are going to follow Him you are going to be His disciple—a disciplined one. You literally become a disciple of the Spirit.
This Holy Spirit of Discipline will have nothing to do with falsehood. Wisdom of Solomon 1:5
Solomon talked about a Spirit coming to him.
I called for help and there came to me a Spirit of Wisdom. Wisdom of Solomon 7:8
What was the Spirit that came to him? The Spirit of Wisdom, the Spirit of Truth, and the Spirit of Discipline. These are names of the Holy Ghost.
God spoke these words to me this week, He said, “I am the Spirit of Discipline and without discipline you cannot know Me.” I was then reminded of verse 1:5 in the “Wisdom of Solomon.”
You may have an idea about the Holy Ghost. You may even have had an experience here or there, but to really know and walk with God–the Holy Ghost–you are going to have to be a Spirit disciple. You are going to have to be disciplined in the things of the Spirit.
How many times have I said you should be praying an hour a day in other tongues? How many times have I said you need to be doing your scriptural confessions every day? Why do I say every day? Are you disciplined if you aren’t doing them every day? Just because you did them once in the sixties doesn’t mean you are disciplined. That proves you are undisciplined.
You put your pants on today. You should put the Word of God on every day.
There’s a discipline that goes alone with walking in the Spirit and without that discipline–because He is the Spirit of Discipline–you don’t get to really know Him.
What is the root of the word discipline? Disciple. We have scripture after scripture in the book of Proverbs where you are required to repent and change for the Spirit of Wisdom do something for you.
Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you. Proverbs 1:23
If the Holy Ghost is the Spirit of Discipline and you want to walk with Him you have to be disciplined. What does that mean? You are going to have to discipline your life in a way that doesn’t go down the wrong trail it goes down the right trail—doing things that please Him.
Say this: I am a disciple of the Holy Ghost.
Disciple and discipline are from the same root word. You are going to have to be a disciplined person. This is good news! Because, if I can discipline myself then I won’t be disciplined in a bad way. I can correct myself on a daily basis to follow Him—the Holy Ghost. He is the Spirit of Discipline. If you are going to follow Him you are going to be a disciple. You literally become a “Disciple of the Spirit.”
If you continue in my word you are my disciples indeed and you shall know the Truth and the Truth shall make you free. John 16:7
Jesus is saying that if you continue in my word you are going to know the Spirit of Truth. Right? Then what? You are going to be disciples of the things of the Spirit.
You’ve got a lot of people that like to say they are a disciple of Jesus. OK, but that will only take you so far. It should take you to the Spirit of Truth.
In fact, Jesus’s ministry was intended to bring disciples to the Spirit of Truth. He said it here, “you shall know the Truth.” And who will make you free? The Spirit of Truth will make you free.
Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (freedom). 2 Corinthians 3:17
Who is doing the freedom making?— The Spirit of Truth. I’m certainly not saying that Jesus and the Holy Ghost were working on two separate agendas. I’m saying that Jesus’ ministry led and pointed to the ministry of Holy Ghost and now—in our day—we are to be disciples of Him.
Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist. John the Baptist said,
…He that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire. Matthew 3:11
And then one day John said to his disciples,
…, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. John 1:36-37
What did Andrew do when he heard John say that? He left John the Baptist and started following Jesus.
John the Baptist’s ministry pointed to Jesus. So—when Jesus began his ministry—the disciples who were actually listing to John’s message literally left John and followed Jesus.
Jesus’ ministry pointed to the Holy Ghost coming. He said,
I’m going to go away but if I do I will send you another. John 16:7
Jesus’ ministry pointed to the Holy Ghost coming. Therefore, people who are literally listening to what Jesus said are the ones who are going to go and follow the Holy Ghost and become Spirit Disciples.
“I am the Spirt of Discipline and without discipline you cannot know Me or My manifestations. Especially My new manifestations,” you will not be able to go there without being disciplined in the things of God.
There’s a comfort in being disciplined. There’s a comfort in doing things repetitively—over and over, disciplining yourself. This may not be a popular message and nobody really wants to hear about being disciplined, but He is the Spirit of Discipline! It’s part of His name. It’s part of Who He Is.
If we are going to walk with the Holy Ghost then we are going to have to be disciples of the Spirit of Discipline. You are not going to get to be where you need to be without the Spirit of Discipline—without disciplining yourself in the things of the Spirit.
All the benefits that come with the Holy Ghost—you are not going to know them until you know Him—as the Spirit of Discipline and begin to discipline yourself in the things that He is telling you to do.
There’s something enjoyable about walking the straight and narrow road. Maybe you’ve never tried it before, but there’s something enjoyable about it. Get used to it! That’s how we are going to follow the HOLY Ghost, is by traveling on the straight, narrow, disciplined road. That’s how we do this. That’s how we live this life. If you like the wide broad road you are not going to get very far.
For bodily exercise profits a little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. 1 Timothy 4:8
Exercising your body profits a little but doing things God’s way is profitable unto all things. Godliness is simply doing things God’s way. If you will look at this scripture and understand that this is how God does things—God is very disciplined in what He says and what He does. If you are going to be like Him (godliness), you have to walk with Him as the Spirit of Discipline. You must be a person who is disciplined in the things that He is and does—in the same way.
Can two walk together, except they be agreed? Amos 3:3
You are walking with God. You are being discipled unto godliness (God-like-ness) with Him—the Spirit of Discipline. He is living in you and you should be disciplined in the things that He does and is doing. Right?
What’s the number one thing that He’s doing? Speaking words. That’s why praying in Tongues is so important. How can you walk together with God without being in agreement? How do you get in agreement with someone? By what they are saying.
I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: 1 Corinthians 14:18
Here the Apostle Paul tells us that he speaks in tongues more than the whole church at Corinth and they were known for their exuberance in tongue talking. How did he get to that place of speaking so much in the Spirit? Was is just some grace that magically fell on him one day and he didn’t have to do anything about it? No. He disciplined himself to pray in tongues more than everybody else. He must have seen a great value in it.
Do you think he got any value out of speaking in tongues more than you all? Well, I would say so, a good portion of the new testament came through him. Why? Because he was discipled by the Spirit, to stay in the Spirit, and to walk in the Spirit. How can two walk together except they be agreed? He was speaking in agreement with the Holy Ghost—the language of the Spirit—more than everybody else. More agreement. More manifestation.
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Galatians 5:16
Do you think that if you discipline yourself to be in the Spirit—to walk with the Spirit—that the increase of being led by the Spirit will be much greater? People say they want to be led by the Spirit but they don’t want to discipline themselves in following the Spirit.
“I Am the Spirit of Discipline and without discipline you cannot know Me or my manifestations.”
